![]() In New Zealand on the other hand, the Pakeha (white European) identifies himself with a New Zealand culture which includes Maoris (the indigenous Polynesians). In the Southern States of America the whites identify themselves primarily with a sub-culture which excludes the Negroes. ![]() The existence in New Zealand of what Professor Geddes calls “a strong ideological theme of racial equality which has influenced both - 376 ethnic groups in their behaviour towards each other and modified the conflicts of interest and cultural values between them” 2 has important ramifications which Ausubel under-estimated. It is often forgotten that a good legend as well as a bad one has the possibility of self-fulfilment. To define the New Zealand situation emphatically as “racially equal” is in itself an important step towards the achievement of good race relations. The truth of the matter is somewhere in between. ![]() At the same time he under-estimates the moral factor to the same degree that others (churchmen occasionally) over-estimate it when they assume that morality determines race relations. This paper seeks to provide an account of race relations which organically relates factors operating in the New Zealand racial situation, and which is also consistent both with sociological findings about race and culture conflict in other areas of the world and with a growing body of sociological generalizations.Ī good starting point is this statement by Ausubel: “Nevertheless, in considering all of the evidence it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that the relatively good race relations in New Zealand, as compared to the United States, are not attributable to any greater public enlightenment about such matters but to more favourable historical, demographic and economic factors, such as no history of prior servitude, the smaller size of the minority group, the long period of Maori withdrawal, and the virtual elimination of inter-racial competition”.
